New Jersey Educators create Hands-On Coding

In January of 2016, President Obama announced his bold “Computer Science for All” initiative.  This plan calls for all students across the country to learn computer science. Myself, Marcos Navas and Joann Presby recently launched an Indiegogo Campaign that supports this initiative.  Our campaign is two-fold; to provide Hands-On Coding Block manipulatives along with a Book Series that bridges the gap between Computer Science and Literacy. The goal of our Coding Blocks is to help Computer Science become pervasive in the lives of all children.

If you didn’t Make it; here’s what you missed!

Meet the Makers: Towhee LLC

Towhee-JCFabLab_ArtTechModelA

Maker Faire participants can sign up and form teams to meet an all-terrain challenge course using a stock Towhee ArtTech Kinetic Model A vehicle.

This is not your Dad’s pinewood derby. The challengers will need to test, modify, and race-run their Model A cars over various obstacles and terrain. A hybrid of Formula One and Rally racing, all teams will start with 2 stock ArtTech Model A kit cars — everyone starts with the same box of parts.

From there, teams can order up new parts that will be laser cut on-demand. Teams will be judged on: fastest course speed, design innovation, style, and audience appeal.

Meet the Makers: Gridlink Systems

today_tomorrow image

Because electricity is in high demand, realistically we need to triple grid capacity over the next 30 years by both energy efficiency and generation or face grid instability. We are failing to do so, therefore inevitably the grid will become unstable.

Systems selling power to Utilities without energy storage can not operate in blackouts and the utility grid is becoming more volatile

The cost to upgrade these systems is very high because with current technology, it’s necessary to take out and destroy existing components such as inverters and wiring to accomplish the modification.

Current technology does not exist that can effectively provide a perfect universal upgrade of low cost energy storage to these existing “grid tie” (power plants that sell to utility) systems without enormous expense.

Additionally no one has ever made a micro 230W solar battery backup system that was also a grid tie.

Thanks to Gridlink Systems new technology we can upgrade virtually any grid tie system to battery backup for as little as $2000 in material costs- thousands, even tens of thousands less than our competitors.

Meet the Makers: Makerhoods

makerhoods

The Makerhoods© concept is rooted in the fact that well over half the businesses in the US today are home based business and that such employment will likely grow in the future. To harness and amplify this trend, the built environment must be developed to offer spatial work and housing options in a way that is sustainable ecologically and economically.

Our organization is developing affordable places where makers can live and work that encourage new businesses to flourish. Makerhoods© is an urban planning and economic development strategy that unleashes micro-entrepreneurs to strengthen communities through affordable live/work accommodations. Classic living above the shop settings provide street-level commercial workshops and apartment living for Shopkeepers, “Makers” and Creatives in compact walkable urban neighborhoods.

Meet the Makers: P3 Organic Exchange

Vermicast_3sm

P3 Organic Exchange is a Newark-based environmental services company that works with local businesses to help divert organics (food scraps) from the waste stream. We use organics as feed stock for our worms, which with the help of smaller decomposers transform waste to a nitrogen-rich soil amendment. The product is called vermicast and it is used alone and in blends to both stimulate better growth and regenerate polluted soils.

Meet the Makers: 3D Monstr
